It Started in Buenos Aires
We did not set out to start a drinks brand. We set out on a honeymoon.
Argentina changed things. Gradually, over afternoons spent wandering neighbourhoods we did not know, watching how the city moved. And always, at some point in the afternoon, someone would bring out a gourd.
Mate in Buenos Aires is not a product. It is a gesture. The way it is passed between people, the unhurried pause it creates, is something that does not translate into words. You have to be handed one to understand it.
We had tried mate before, passed around between friends in Central Europe. But it was Argentina that made it make sense. By the end of the trip we were starting every day with a coffee and spending the rest of it with mate.
When we came home, we looked for what we had found. It did not exist. That gap was too obvious to ignore. Matelo is our attempt to close it.
Where Mate Actually Comes From
The Guarani people of South America, the indigenous culture across what is now Argentina, Paraguay and southern Brazil, called yerba mate the drink of the gods. They believed it was a gift from the earth. That is not a marketing claim. That is where this drink comes from, and it is where the story starts.
Mate has been shared in circles across South America for centuries. It spread to Central Europe through generations of cultural exchange. Argentina runs on it. Uruguay drinks more of it per capita than anywhere else on earth. The ritual of the gourd and the bombilla, the shared cup, the metal straw, the meaning carried in the gesture, predates commerce entirely.
The figure on the Matelo can is that person. Hat on, gourd in hand, afternoon unfolding. It is not decoration. It is the brand's origin, drawn.
Why We Built It the Way We Did
Matelo exists to bring mate to the UK as what it actually is. Not an ingredient. Not a functional claim. A cultural drink with centuries of meaning behind it, made properly, for people who pay attention to what they consume.
Every can is brewed from whole yerba mate leaves, not extract, not concentrate. The ingredient list is short and pronounceable. The energy it delivers is real, sustained and calm. The natural result of caffeine and theobromine working together, not a formula engineered for a label.
One of us thinks differently. The afternoon used to be the hardest part of the working day, the window where focus dissolved and another coffee only made things worse. Mate changed that. Not as a treatment or a shortcut. Simply as a drink that delivered the right kind of energy at the right time, without the restlessness that too much coffee can bring. We built Matelo partly because of that experience and partly because we suspected we were not the only ones who needed it.
Made Carefully, For You
We are a small brand and we intend to stay considered. Every decision, from where we source our leaves to how we tell this story, is made with care. We are not rushing this. We are building something we are genuinely proud of and that takes time.
Matelo is for people who pay attention. Who are curious about what they consume, interested in where things come from, and willing to try something that does not shout about itself. People who have a complicated relationship with their afternoon coffee and have been looking, without much success, for something that actually fits.
We think mate is that something. The world has known it for centuries. The UK is only now catching up.
If you have found us, you are probably exactly who we made this for.
Values Brewed in Every Can
Steeped in culture. Mate has centuries of history behind it. We take that seriously in everything we make and everything we say.
Real ingredients, always. Whole yerba mate leaves. Nothing synthetic. No ingredient you cannot pronounce. That is a promise, not a marketing line.
Made with intention. Every decision, from the leaves we brew to the venues we work with, is made carefully. We would rather do fewer things properly than many things quickly.
For people who pay attention. Matelo is not for everyone and that is intentional. It is for people who are curious, considered and already thinking about what they consume.
Net positive from the start. Working toward B Corp certification. Recyclable cans. Ethical sourcing built in from day one, not retrofitted later.
